In machines, it is often crucial how precise shafts are during rotation. A skewed shaft will cause friction heat and thereby increase wear in the machine. In some machines with high rotation speeds, it can even pose a danger to life for an operator near a machine with such imbalances. A dial indicator – digital or analog – then comes in handy for checking runout in a shaft. Let the measuring arm run against the shaft itself, and read off the maximum value obtained at a given position on the shaft. Add a magnetic stand.
